I think the law requires that meth heads automatically pass background checks when attempting to purchase a firearm.

Not legally. But they are pretty easy to get illegally in the US. 6/3/23

The vetting process is not very good in many states.

No. (According to 27 CFR SS 478.11) I suppose maybe there is a sticky part about the "known" qualifier, but the short answer is no.

There is a question on the background check paperwork that asks if you use any drugs. If you answer "no" & that's a lie that they can trace, you can get a jail stint out of it. Other than that, I don't know if they process apps against a list of "known drug users".

All you have to do is say "No I am not a meth head."

Correct. However, it's complicated. For a business to legally sell firearms, it needs a federal license. In order to have a federal license, that business must do background checks. BUT, it's easy to skirt around in states that don't require background checks for private sales - simply by purchasing through a private sale. MOST states (as of 2023) DON'T require background checks for private sales. Or, if a business isn't not legally allowed to sell firearms, it doesn't mean that that business does not actually sell firearms... which means that, even in states that DO require universal background checks, the requirement has to be enforced to mean anything.

With the lack of sensible gun control laws like background checks meth heads probably can buy guns in the US.
